Pearson Introduces “Smart” Technology for Collecting Patient Registration Information

Docuscan System With Digital Pen Technology Allows Hospitals, Medical Offices to Efficiently and Accurately Capture Patient Information

PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Oct. 29, 2007 – Today at the Medical Group Management Association’s 2007 Annual Conference, Pearson debuted the Docuscan Patient Registration system, an innovative solution for digitally capturing patient registration information, saving valuable time and reducing the chance of data entry errors.

With the Docuscan Patient Registration solution with Paros™ technology, patients use a digital pen to fill out the registration form in the waiting room. Using the progressive yet simple digital pen-and-paper technology, patients fill out forms as they normally would, and the technology automatically collects and transmits the data for use by the medical office staff.  This process saves valuable time for clinic and IT staff.

Pearson’s pen-and-paper format is familiar to patients. They don’t need to learn how to navigate software menus or manipulate a hand-held computer.

“In today’s medical environment, it is more critical than ever before for hospitals, clinics and doctors’ offices to maintain up-to-date patient registration information and medical histories,” said John Harnett, president and CEO of the Data Management group of Pearson. “Practices using the Docuscan system are able to efficiently and accurately collect current patient information and seamlessly integrate it with their electronic medical records systems and practice management systems.”

The proprietary Paros technology integrates Anoto® digital pen-and-paper functionality and character recognition from Vision Objects’ MyScripts®, along with Pearson’s proven data capture technology. The digital pen records what is being written on the unique paper that is designed and printed by Pearson. Once the pen is docked, the data are transferred into the electronic medical records systems and practice management systems with one simple click. In September, Pearson launched the Docuscan Patient History system for digitally capturing patient history information and will continue to enhance this technology to provide health care applications such as physician transcriptions and prescriptions.

Patient record solutions from Pearson, such as the Docuscan Patient Encounter System, have enhanced the productivity and increased the quality of care in more than 2,000 U.S. hospitals and medical offices.
